Mazurie, Joseph; Foucart, Marie; Langlade, Aime; Bouget, Jean-francois; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Joly, Jean-pierre; Martin, Anne-genevieve.
This study deals with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : it relies on a survey achieved in july 2001, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according to prices and availability of oysters supplies. The duration until marketable size and mean mortalities seem to have increased since a preceding inquiry in 1986. The main constraint, affecting priorly the south border...

(subtidal on-bottom rearings), has been the year of the gestation for the RISCO-QB project (Risks in shellfish farming, in baie de Quiberon). Discussions with various potential partners have resulted in the project drafting with 3 main objectives : - estimation of the trophic capacity of the bay and adjustment of the rearing biomass, - impact of sediment nearness upon on-bottom technique and adjustment of the rearing practices, - appraisal of the impact of these 2 factors (trophic capacity and sediment nearness) on the budget of the farming companies and their consequences in the management of the mortality risk. Concurrently with the project writing, pre-studies, mainly methodological, have been conducted in the bay since 2007 in order to investigate the...

Field characterization of summer mortality was performed in France in the frame of the Morest project. Natural and hatchery spat were compared between three oyster production areas in France. Regardless of the natural or hatchery origin, oysters died during the reproduction period after temperature reaches 19 degree C. Thus, in southern areas, temperature accelerated gametogenesis of small spat (10mm) as well as adults, and mortality appeared for the two age classes. In contrast, sexual maturation proceeded more slowly in northern where spat mortality was lower compared to 18 months old oysters. However, critical gametogenesis and temperature were not sufficient to induce mortalities, as observed in examples with stable environment. Alternatively sediment...

Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois; Claude, Serge; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Langlade, Aime.
Mussel samples have been placed in plastic-mesh bags hung on wood poles (« bouchots »), at 4 locations of a mussel culture area in the bay of Vilaine (South Brittany, France). They have been monitored for one year, from February 2000 to February 2001. The recorded growth have been rather fast (plus 1.2 g per month between April and September), and mortalities moderate (between 15% to 25%), with better results in southern stations, further from the estuary. Among the physico-chemical parameters recorded, the most striking were very low salinities (below 10 g/l) recorded for days, after heavy rains. They provoqued a valve closure of mussels (recorded by a « valvometer »). Some physiological indicators being tested (muscle force and hermeticity) seemed to...

Bouget, Jean-francois; Mazurie, Joseph.
This study presents the main results of oyster growth obtained experimentally in 2002 and 2003, in the farming area of Cancale before the leases reorganization of 2004. According to the REMORA monitoring network from 1990 to 2004, the oyster growth in Cancale bay may be characterized by an average annual weight gain (around 30g per year), a rather weak meat content compared to other regional oyster sites, and an exceptional quality of shell (absence of blisters, few Poly do rd). Spatially, the oyster farming area of Cancale shows rather homogeneous performances of breeding, in spite of the muddy southern area. In addition an experimental trial in 2003 allowed to evaluate favourably the potential of the new oyster area of Saint-Benoît : in these...

Determination of risk factors for herpesvirus outbreak in oysters using a broad-scale spatial epidemiology framework ArchiMer
Pernet, Fabrice; Fuhrmann, Marine; Petton, Bruno; Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois; Fleury, Elodie; Daigle, Gaetan; Gernez, Pierre.
Marine diseases have major impacts on ecosystems and economic consequences for aquaculture and fisheries. Understanding origin, spread and risk factors of disease is crucial for management, but data in the ocean are limited compared to the terrestrial environment. Here we investigated how the marine environment drives the spread of viral disease outbreak affecting The Pacific oyster worldwide by using a spatial epidemiology framework. We collected environmental and oyster health data at 46 sites spread over an area of 300 km2 along an inshore-offshore gradient during an epizootic event and conducted risk analysis. We found that disease broke out in the intertidal farming area and spread seaward. Mortalities and virus detection were observed in oysters...

Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois; Langlade, Aime; Claude, Serge.
This report summarizes a list of husbandry experiments conducted between 2004 and 2007 so as to reduce the summer mortalities of the oyster Crassostrea gigas by farming practices. The Japanese technique so‐called “hardening”, based on nursing the young oysters (less than 1 year‐old) in intertidal areas with high air exposure, is tested and adapted. Significant improvements of survival rates (e.g. 60% survival instead of 40% survival rate) have been obtained by transferring the spat only a few month (between march and june‐july) on “high” inter‐tidal farming plots (up to 40% of mean air exposure time). In such conditions, growth is transiently reduced, but a compensatory growth seems to happen when oysters are transferred back on low concessions. Another...

Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois.
in order to estimate the carrying capacity of Mont Saint-Michel Bay, the stock (or biomass) of cupped oysters, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated intertidally, in Cancale Bay, has been estimated in october 2002. Aerial photographs, at 2 scales (1/10 000 and 1/2000), provided by the mollusc farmers union, have been used to estimate the cumulative length of surelevaged trestles (« tables ») and the occupation rate by oyster bags. A field survey, between the 7th and 9th of october 2002, has been conducted by Ifremer with the help of « Lycée Maritime de Saint-Malo », on 40 sampled stations : 3 subsample bags per station were examined (counts and weights of different age-class oysters). 309 ha out of 333 leased ha were considered exploited (after elimination of...

Joly, Jean-pierre; Bouget, Jean-francois; Hirata, Toshio.

ArchiMer
Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Goyard, Emmanuel; Mazurie, Joseph; Claude, Serge; Bouget, Jean-francois; Langlade, Aime; Le Coguic, Marie-jo.
The network IFREMER/REMORA has watched every year, since 1993, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster class-size ("juveniles" of the first-year c1ass and "adults" of the second year c1ass), distributed among various stations of the French oyster areas. This has provided a quite standard and simple annual assessment of the rearing results, generally tallied with professional observations. From year to year, data series have been obtained, from which mean values (references), chronological trends or spatial differences can be analysed. Results in Brittany, from 1993 to 1998, show that, in a "normal" year, 30 g oysters grow to 60-80 g at the end of the year, with a mortality rate of 10-15%. Mortality occures mainly in...

Ropert, Michel; Rauflet, Fabienne; Soletchnik, Patrick; Geairon, Philippe; Bedier, Edouard; Bouget, Jean-francois.
Temperature affects undoubtedly the 3 working sites where, systematically, the observation of the first abnormal mortalities coincides with a water temperature of around 19°C. The nature of the processes implied could have a "cumulative" effect, affecting the physiology (this phenomenon has been observed with other marine species) or a "threshold" effect, acting only as a trigger. The question has not been answered yet. The kinetics of the thermic evolution around the mortality period has to be studied in depth in order to understand if this temperature acts more as an "associated factor", during a chronic stress period, or during an acute stress, as suggested by the "on-bottom/off bottom" mortality model of the Marennes Oléron Bay [12].

This study (“Risco”), implicating both industry, socio-economic experts and biologists, was funded by the Regional Council of Brittany, for 3 years (2010-2012), to investigate about the causes of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) mortalities in the bay of Quiberon (South Brittany, France). The protocol including both a sonar and video visualization of the bottom, and a monthly survey of 15 experimental oyster structures, allowed to assess the risk due to predation. A clear spatial distribution of the predatory effect was evidenced, with starfish (Asterias rubens and Marthasterias glacialis) predominating in the North-East sector, and boring snails (Ocenebra erinacea and Pterophora inornata) in the South-Center area.. The main mortalities from these predators...

The project “Risco”, supported by the “Pôle Mer” and funded by the Regional Council of Brittany, deals with specific risks of mortality of oysters, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated on the bottom, in a subtidal bay of South Brittany : the bay of Quiberon (56, France). Massive mortalities of oysters were reported in summer 2006 in this bay, exclusively located in the deep muddy area with a positive gradient eastward. A validated biogeochemical model was applied in order to simulate the dissolved oxygen over 2000-2006 : it revealed several episodes of hypoxia, more or less intense according to years, but with the same spatial distribution. This approach proved 2006 to be the most hypoxic year since 2000. The hypoxia was due to a rare conjunction of 3 factors :...
